Massimo and Federico have been spending weeks working on a national survey on LGBTIQ+ themes. Say it like this, and it might sound quite easy and straight-forward, start doing it and you might change your mind.
The entire process took many months as we had to reach out to surveying institutes and see what they could offer. The actual designing of the survey takes a great deal of time as you go over the questions multiple times wandering if they are clear enough to a lay public, if the phrasing is always appropriate, if the whole thing is not too long… Then you still need to run a test on a limited sample of respondents and also need to supervise the ad campaign and make decisions on different graphic designs. Finally, once everything’s ready, the fun bit actually begins as the results start getting in. Our survey has two steps: a first national surveying campaign to collect data from the general population and a second campaign targeting LGBTIQ+ respondents.
We are currently between steps one and two, which means that Massimo and Federico have been spending the last days analyzing the data to boil it down to a few main findings and draw them up in a report. The International Day against Homolesbobitransphobia is approaching (17 May) and we know that media outlets might want to pick up the survey findings. This is important to us because the more the news of our survey spreads, the easier it will be for us to reach as many and as different LGBTQI+ people as possible during the second phase. Knowing that the media could use our report invites us to really take the time to think through how we want to frame the results.
In all honesty, some of us had to skimp on their sleep time to be able to deliver the report by the 17th but working together does make things more enjoyable!
